Ravel Mother Goose Suite

Robin Holloway Five Temperaments (world première tour)

Beethoven Quintet for Piano and Winds in E flat Op. 16

For this concert, Britten Sinfonia's quintet of virtuoso wind players take centre stage, joined by pianist Imogen Cooper for a delightful programme of works from three centuries. Beethoven's Quintet for Piano and Wind in E flat is a wonderful piece, showing Beethoven as a master of classical forms in a work that is at times witty and high-spirited, at times lyrical and expansive. Ravel's Mother Goose whisks us away to an enchanted land of fairy tales, with a colourful and magical portrayal of characters such as Sleeping Beauty and the Empress of the Pagodas. The 21st century is represented by Cambridge composer Robin Holloway, whose new work is premièred on this tour.
