Stephen Williams
Principal Bass
Stephen Williams was born in
Wales and started to play the double bass at the age of 14. He played
with the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, the European Community Youth
Orchestra and studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He played
with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for three years is Principal Bass
with the English Chamber Orchestra.
Steve is a founder member of and Principal Bass with Britten Sinfonia,
playing at their highly acclaimed Proms debut in 1999 and at Britten Sinfonia
Soloists Wigmore Hall debut. For many years he has performed with
the Gaudier Ensemble whose Schubert Octet recording was first choice on
the BBCs Building a Library programme. They now have their own annual
festivals in Holland and Cerne Abbas and make regular recordings for Hyperion
Records.
Steve is a regular guest principal having recently appeared with the LSO,
Academy of St Martins and Scottish Chamber Orchestra and is a frequent
guest with chamber groups including the Brindisi and Mandelsing quartets
as well as Capricorn and the Haffner Wind Ensemble.
His bass is made by Gasparo da Salo 1582
